In 2023, Roanoke, VA had a population of 98.7k people with a median age of 38 and a median household income of $52,671. Between 2022 and 2023 the population of Roanoke, VA declined from 99,213 to 98,677, a −0.54% decrease and its median household income grew from $51,523 to $52,671, a 2.23% increase.

If job growth is an indicator of a healthy economy, it’s safe to say the Roanoke Region just got a clean bill of health. Recent data show regional employment grew 2.5 percent over the last year, outperforming the state job growth rate of 2.2 percent.

Their population has remained relatively steady, but the New River Valley and Roanoke Valley have seen a significant economic uptick, a statewide study determined earlier this year.

The overall U.S. population is expected to increase from 331 million in 2020 to 371 million in 2050, with most states experiencing similar deceleration in growth rates.

The Congressional Budget Office projects that U.S. population growth will slow over the next 30 years, but net immigration will increasingly drive growth, accounting for all population increases beginning in 2040.

Raleigh ranks second among the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., with a city population of 482,295 in 2023 and a metro population growth of 13.69% since 2020.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s Vintage 2024 estimates highlight that cities of all sizes grew on average from 2023 to 2024, with Southern and Western cities, including Raleigh, experiencing accelerated growth.

The Raleigh and Durham metros were both ranked 21st on the list of fastest-growing places in the U.S. for 2023-2024, reflecting significant population increases.

The city is among the top three fastest-growing U.S. cities based on construction trends, including rezonings and building permits.
